Focus Week: System Recovery Week

This week is a special Focus Week where we'll be examining the techniques used by experienced system administrators to recover a system or perform special maintainence in unusual circumstances. This will include the use of single-user mode, rescue mode (booted from optical disc), LVM and RAID recovery, and dealing with disk images from other computers.

Folks have started asking me what's happening with the Fedora Daily Package, because there haven't been any updates for a while. I want to assure you that I haven't give up on the project; I haven't written for a few weeks because I've been swamped with two other projects. I want to share one of these with you: it's the Seneca Free Software and Open Source Symposium (FSOSS 2007). Here are the main details:

Seneca Free Software and Open Source Symposium (FSOSS 2007)

What: Open source in person. Two days of the best of open source: development, open source project updates, open content and digital media, legal and licensing issues, future directions for open source, and much more.

When: Thursday, October 25 and Friday, October 26.

Cost: Thanks to some generous sponsors, this event is very affordable: advance registration is $40, student advance registration is $20, and walk-in registration is $60. This price includes all talks on both days, two lunches, and a reception. A variety of hands-on workshops are also available, for an additional $20 each.

Where: Seneca College's gorgeous Seneca@York campus, located at York University, Toronto. (It's a Moriyama & Teshima building...)

Bonus: If you register on or before October 8, you could win an iPod Nano!

One Hundred Daily Packages!

Today we've published our 100th article! The Fedora Daily Package is now serving about 135,000 hits a week to about 9,000 unique IPs. We had visitors from 43 different countries in our first week, and the list has grown since then.

Apologies for the site availability issues lately -- not sure if the increased traffic or a change in virtualization (KVM on F7 vs. Xen on FC6) is responsible, but Apache is periodically becoming unresponsive. The investigation is continuing, and thanks for your patience in the meantime.

What happened to the Fedora Daily Package? -- You've probably noticed that it hasn't been updated daily. My apologies -- this was due to the fact that:

I've been busy with the Seneca CDOT reception, and
We ran into some serious problems with Revisor, which was supposed to be the star of last week's focus on Fedora 7's new media creation facilities.

The Fedora Daily Package will be back to regular form next week. Thanks for your patience!

To celebrate, next week will be a Focus Week special edition of the Fedora Daily Package, where we'll examine in detail the packaging features that let you create your own custom "spins" and live discs. (I've briefly blogged about some of these new features over at the O'Reilly Network).
