Thanks. That was a nice summary of grub configuration.
Colour coding the config text is a good idea. To really configure grub in non standard ways I needed to understand how it operated at a lower level, which I documented here: http://www.pixelbeat.org/docs/disk/
You forgot to mention that when you add or remove kernel packages the "stanzas" are updated accordingly. Even when you compile a vanilla kernel.
Just remember to don't remove all your kernels because your grub.conf will have no Fedora stanzas and by the time you install a new one there will be no way to know how to create new stanzas as there is basis. I ran into that problem due to some kernel packages issue.
Felipe, good point!
Others may find this previous article about kernel package management useful: http://dailypackage.fedorabook.com/index.php?/archives/23-Wednesday-Why-Fedora-kernel-package-installation.html Note Comment #2.1 about how the kernel parameters are copied from previous Grub boot stanzas.
Chainloading grub instances from different Linux partitions is ideal if you have one kernel per Partition on non-primary boot loaders. This makes it easy to maintain new Linux installations and you dont need to enter any stanzas besides the chainloader command itself in the primary GRUB boot loader.
